Webster’s definition of a freshman is: a 1st year student. As a parent, you see your college freshman as much more than that…this is your baby boy or girl getting thrown out into the big, cruel world. There are probably a myriad of emotions running through you: excited, insecure, exhilarated and downright scared. Keep in mind that, as your college freshman is frantically packing up his belongings to move into that dorm, he is more than likely feeling those very same emotions…times 10!

Here are some tips for you to help your young adult make the transition to college:

WHAT IS AN INDEX FUND? An index fund is a mutual fund that duplicates as closely as possible the performance of a stock market index or bond market index that it tracks. A few examples of indices are: S&P 500, Wilshire 5000, Russell 2000 and Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Because index mutual funds are passively managed, they charge lower fees resulting in some of the lowest expense ratios in the mutual fund market. Vanguard, one of the leading index fund providers, has an average expense ratio of 0.27% versus the market average for all mutual funds
of 1.50%!

It makes “cents” to finish your college degree online. You will have increased earning power, increased job portability, and increased opportunity if you finish your college degree. Online college degree programs now allow students who have been unable to complete a college degree because of roadblocks to complete their degrees. Having a job, or children or other obligations, or having moved to a more remote location are no longer roadblocks to an education.

For some people, a day’s work does not count for much if it doesn’t involve getting their hands dirty or breaking a sweat. To these achievers, work means a lot more than wearing a suit and shuffling papers at a desk. If you are a “get-down-to-the-nitty-gritty” kind of person, you might consider a career in auto mechanics, electrical work, carpentry, or law enforcement. Nearly 6,000 vocational school programs are available to give you the information and training you need to break into these and other related fields.
